fundó una escuela de infantes en 1837, a la que luego llamó
Kindergarten, o "jardín de niños. Pensaba que la "actividad autónoma y el juego eran factores esenciales para la educación de los niños, donde el papel de los profesores era alentar la autoexpresión a través del juego, en lugar de instruir o adoctrinar. Tuvo gran influencia en las técnicas modernas de la
educación preescolar, como en las ideas de
John Dewey.
